SUMMARY:Time and Space
DESCRIPTION:West Valley City – The West Valley Symphony of Utah presents Time and Space at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center\, 1355 W. 3100 S.  The concert launches promptly at 7:30 pm\, so get ready for a ride through space without leaving your seat. \nJoin the West Valley Symphony of Utah as they celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the music of Star Wars as they perform the themes from Episodes 1-7 of the Star Wars saga written by legendary composer John Williams. Also featured is music from other science fiction movie and TV favorites including Back to the Future\, Doctor Who\, and others. Come dressed up in costume and celebrate some of your science fiction favorites and enjoy a journey through Space and Time with the West Valley Symphony of Utah! \nIn an interview with Tim Greiving with the Los Angeles Times in December of 2015\, John Williams said this about his association with Star Wars. “I can only say that I’m enormously grateful people have embraced this music\, and it’s brought them to orchestral music in the way that it has for many younger people. I don’t make a particular distinction between ‘high art’ and ‘low art.’ Music is there for everybody. It’s a river we can all put our cups into\, and drink it\, and be sustained by it.”  Now in his mid-80s\, how does he feel about composing more music? “To continue to work\, to continue to love what you do\, is certainly a contributing element to one’s longevity and health\,” Williams said. “And I am so lucky to be working in a field that you never grow tired of.”  Join us while we celebrate this great music as well as music of other great 20th Century composers. \nThe West Valley Symphony\, now in its 26th season is an all-volunteer orchestra of nearly 60 musicians\, performing 3-5 concerts each year. We appreciate the hospitality of the staff of the Utah Cultural Celebration Center. Admission is Free but donations appreciated.  No tickets required. For additional information\, contact Eric Kartchner (801) 979-0684.  The concert is Sponsored in part by a grant from Salt Lake County Zoo\, Arts\, and Parks in cooperation with the Utah Cultural Celebration Center \n  \nAdmission is Free\, and donations are welcomed.  Tickets are not required.

SUMMARY:"On The Trail"
DESCRIPTION:West Valley City – The West Valley Symphony of Utah presents: On the Trail\, featuring the “Grand Canyon Suite” by Ferde Grofé\, under the direction of Music Director Donny Gilbert\, Saturday\, April 22nd at 7:30 p.m. The concert features music that describes the wide-open spaces\, majesty and people who discovered and settled the western parts of the United States\, starting with the energetic “Cowboys Overture”. The symphony will then pay tribute to the Native Americans that inhabited the lands west of the Appalachians with the noble sounds of “The Last of the Mohicans”. The orchestra will then perform a picturesque suite based on one of the most impressive and awe-inspiring features of planet Earth: The Grand Canyon. The “Grand Canyon Suite” features sunrises\, the wide-open desert\, a donkey ride to the bottom of the canyon and a midnight rain storm complete with lightning and thunder. Come and enjoy this musical journey and tour of the west with the West Valley Symphony. \nComposer Ferde Grofé\, the Prince Minister of Jazz\, was born Ferdinand Rudolph von Grofé (pronounced grow-fay) on March 27\, 1892 in New York City. While still a child\, Grofé’s family moved to Los Angeles\, California. His father was an actor and baritone singer while his mother was a cellist and music instructor. In 1931\, Grofé’s most famous work\, The Grand Canyon Suite\, premiered in Chicago at the Studebaker Theater on November 22. The work consists of five movements each designed to describe an episode of life in the Canyon. Grofé had fallen under the spell of the Grand Canyon and had vowed to translate its impressions into a tangible form. As he would later write\, “It became an obsession. The richness of the land and the rugged optimism of its people had fired my imagination. I was determined to put it all to music someday.” \nin his later years\, Grofé wrote: “This composition was born of sight\, sound and sensations common to all of us. I think I have spoken of America in this music simply because America spoke to me\, just as it has spoken to you and to every one of us. If I have succeeded in capturing some part of the American musical spirit\, I am grateful that I was trained to do so. But this music is your music\, and mine only in the highly technical sense that a copyright has been filed away with my name on it. Always we must realize that there is much more to hear. Out land is rich in music\, and if you listen you can hear it right now. This is our music you hear\, surging forth\, singing up to every one of us.” \n  \n

SUMMARY:"Pines of Rome"
DESCRIPTION:THE WEST VALLEY SYMPHONY OF UTAH\nPRESENTS\nOTTORINO RESPIGHI’S\nPINES OF ROME\nSaturday\, March 19\, 2016 – 7:30pm \nUtah Cultural Celebration Center \n1355 W 3100 S\, West Valley City\, UT 84119 \nThe West Valley Symphony of Utah presents: “Pines of Rome” by Ottorino Respighi\, with Music Director Donny Gilbert\, Saturday\, March 19th at 7:30 p.m. \nThough Respighi was schooled in his native Bologna\, Ottorino Respighi started his career in earnest as an orchestral viola player in Russia\, where he had the opportunity to study with Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov\, renowned as a master of orchestral color. Further work ensued in Berlin\, with Max Bruch\, before Respighi returned to Italy\, where he would make his mark. Written in 1923-24 The Pines of Rome “uses nature as a point of departure\, in order to recall memories and visions. The centuries-old trees which dominate so characteristically the Roman landscape become testimony for the principal events in Roman life.” \nThe Pines of the Villa Borghese (Allegretto vivace)—Children are at play in the pine groves of the Villa Borghese\, dancing the Italian equivalent of “Ring around a Rosy.” They mimic marching soldiers and battles. They twitter and shriek like swallows at evening\, coming and going in swarms. Suddenly the scene changes. \nThe Pines Near a Catacomb (Lento)—We see the shadows of the pines\, which overhang the entrance of a catacomb. From the depths rises a chant\, which echoes solemnly\, like a hymn\, and is then mysteriously silenced. \nThe Pines of the Janiculum (Lento)—There is a thrill in the air. The full moon reveals the profile of the pines of Gianicolo’s Hill. A nightingale sings. \nThe Pines of the Appian Way (Tempo di Marcia)—Misty dawn on the Appian Way. The tragic country is guarded by solitary pines. Indistinctly\, incessantly\, the rhythm of unending steps. The poet has a fantastic vision of past glories. Trumpets blare\, and the army of the Consul bursts forth in the grandeur of a newly risen sun toward the Sacred Way\, mounting in triumph the Capitoline Hill. \nThe West Valley Symphony\, now in it’s 25rd season is an all-volunteer orchestra of nearly 60 musicians. For over 25 years\, the orchestra has performed 3-5 concerts each year. \nAdmission is Free. No tickets required www.westvalleysymphonyutah.org. We also welcome the Vision Children’s Choir and the West Valley Symphony of Utah. This amazing line-up of performers will kick-off your holiday season with beloved Christmas favorites. \nAnna Wilson is a critically acclaimed jazz recording artist and songwriter whose timeless\, sophisticated sound is juxtaposed by her stunningly contemporary voice and message. Jazz Times says\, “She’s got a voice like crème de cacao and an inner metronome that swings wildly from age to age.” She has shared concert billings with many top acts such as Josh Groban\, Boz Scaggs\, Al Jarreau\, Patty Griffin\, Shawn Colvin\, Keith Urban\, and The Mississippi Mass Choir to name a few. In addition\, she performs regularly at jazz festivals and exclusive wine events like the Napa Valley and Naples Wine Auction\, the Grand Ole Opry\, as well as intimate acoustic performances at Nashville’s famed Bluebird Café and similar venues around the country.\n \nThe Vision Children’s Choir\, conducted by John R. Finley\, was founded in February 2015. The choir has the goal of inspiring children of all ages to achieve greatness by including musical artistry in their daily lives. Vision Children’s Choir works to train and highlight each performer\, and believes it is their individual strengths that bring the choir together harmoniously. Their reputation and experience builds as they perform at local venues such as church and senior centers\, private concerts and public engagements. Following the speech of Governor Herbert\, the choir’s music was heard this past fall at the public memorial ceremony for the flooding victims of Hildale\, Utah. \nThe West Valley Symphony of Utah\, with music director Donny Gilbert\, is well known for their participation in the KUTV Holiday Pops Concert. The 70-piece orchestra performs 5-6 concerts each year. Their most recent concert was presented to a packed house at the Utah Cultural Celebrations Center\, featuring the music of Star Wars. \nMembers of the 100-voice Choral Arts Society of Utah volunteer their time and talents to provide quality performances\, many of which benefit schools and organizations providing humanitarian services to the local area\, including this benefit concert for the KUTV Salvation Army Angel Tree Program.  The concert provides gifts of the season to hundreds of children and senior citizens along the Wasatch Front.  This is a wonderful family event for all ages and we will have a special visit from Santa Claus! \nWe wish to thank KUTV 2News\, Legacy Retirement Communities\, the Sorenson Legacy Foundation and the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Foundation for their continued financial support. Funds from the Salt Lake County Zoo Arts & Parksare also used in the presentation of this concert.
