STRIKES BACK

Saturday, November 7, 2015 – 7:30pm
Utah Cultural Celebration Center
1355 W. 3100 S.  West Valley City, Utah

West Valley City – Music Director Donny Gilbert will lead the West Valley Symphony in a much anticipated concert, A Hyperspace Spectacular “Strikes Back,” featuring music from the film series Star Wars, November 7, 2015, 7:30 p.m. at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center.  The evening promises to keep you on the edge of your seat, and will be full of fun and surprises.

This celebration of the music of John Williams will feature the combined talents of the West Valley Symphony, the Choral Arts Society of Utah, and a few surprises along the way. Comes dressed up as a your favorite Star Wars character and celebrate some of the most famous music ever written for the motion pictures: The Music of Star Wars!  It is more than twenty years since George Lucas’ highly imaginative entertainment experience first transported an audience to an unknown galaxy thousands of light years from earth. The “Star Wars” experience was a blending of contemporary science fiction with the romantic fantasies of sword and sorcery.

John Williams (b. 1932) studied composition at UCLA with Mario Castelnueovo-Tedesco and later attended the Juilliard School. In 1956, he started working as a session pianist in film orchestras. He has composed the music and served as music director for over 70 films, including Jaws, E.T., Star Wars, Superman, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Schindler’s List, Jurassic Park and Memoirs of a Geisha. Williams has been awarded two Emmys, five Oscars, and 17 Grammy Awards, as well as several gold and platinum records. From 1980 to 1993, Williams served as conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra.

The West Valley Symphony of Utah, now in it’s 24th season is an all-volunteer orchestra of 60 musicians. For over 23 years, the orchestra has performed 3-5 concerts each year.  Concerts are held at it’s permanent home, the Utah Cultural Celebration Center in West Valley. The orchestra recently performed for the Days of ’47 Pops Concert in Abravanel Hall, and will perform with the Choral Arts Society of Utah on December 5th for the 18th annual KUTV Holiday Pops Concert, under the direction of Sterling Poulson.
